Playson released King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus in April 2025. This is the latest in a long line of “Hit the Bonus” slots from Playson, a Malta-based studio that supplies many leading social casinos in the US.
These slots are unusual, as you cannot win a prize in the base game. You simply need to keep spinning – and losing money – until you finally trigger a bonus game. Players are then left hoping that they will win enough in the bonus game to recoup their previous losses.
Alternatively, you can simply activate the buy bonus feature. There are three options: buy a standard bonus game for 40x your bet, buy a Super Bonus game for 80x, or buy an Ultra Bonus for 200x. I’ve enjoyed previous games in this series, including 25 Cookies: Hit the Bonus, so I was excited to start playing.
First Impressions with King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus
I was impressed by the dramatic imagery and the smooth animations when I opened the King of the Sky slot for the first time. An eagle was soaring through a dark, stormy sky, with a steely glare as its feathers fluttered.
The music was suitably dramatic, and I enjoyed the overall audiovisual effects. I also found it easy to set my bet size and spin the reels. However, I was a little disappointed to find that the return to player (RTP) rate wasn’t listed in the game information section.

Visuals and Presentation: 4.5/5
This is a visually impressive slot. I particularly enjoyed the animations. The titular eagle looks realistic as it flies through the sky, and it becomes charged with lightning during the bonus rounds. It holds a swirling blue vortex in its claws, and it fires bolts of lightning onto the grid, delivering multipliers.
At the end of the round, the action builds up to a crescendo. Lightning starts flying around in all directions as the various winnings are tallied up, and gold coins then erupt on the screen. The animations remain smooth throughout.
The background isn’t particularly sophisticated. It’s designed to look like a dark sky during a thunderstorm, but the clouds are slightly basic. However, the symbols are well-designed, so I was impressed with the overall presentation of King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus.
The Role of Sound: 4/5
The soundtrack is portentous, reflecting the dark, stormy scene. It’s slow and dramatic during the base game, but it really picks up during the bonus rounds.
There are some fun guitar solos, as it descends into rock and roll at times. The sound effects are exciting, as you’ll hear the eagle screech and the lightning crash onto the grid. It could perhaps be a little livelier, but I enjoyed the soundtrack.
Gameplay Journey: 4/5
This is a highly volatile slot, so my luck varied wildly throughout my journey. Here’s how it unfold:
- I set my stake to $2. I lost 15 consecutive spins before triggering the Eagle Bonus Game. That earned me a $32 payout, which left me up by $2.
- That was encouraging, so I kept spinning the reels. Unfortunately, I then lost 60 times in a row, which left me down by $118. At that point, I triggered the Golden Bonus Game for the first time. I won $48, which narrowed my losses to $70.
- I found the base game pretty frustrating. The only way to win a prize on King of the Sky is by triggering one of the bonus rounds. This is a highly volatile slot, so it can take a long time to trigger a bonus round, and I didn’t enjoy watching my balance go down rapidly while I was waiting.
- Despite my reservations, I kept going, and I triggered the Eagle Bonus Game again after another 15 spins. That netted me $56, which reduced my losses to $44. After another 16 spins, I triggered the Golden Bonus Game for a second time. I benefited from a few multipliers, and I earned $70. By now, I was down by just $16.
- At this point, I decided to activate the buy bonus feature. There were three options: Bonus, Super Bonus, or Ultra Bonus. I opted for Super Bonus, which cost me $160 (80x my stake).
- It opened the Eagle Bonus Game, with multipliers already in place. I won $176, which wiped out my previous losses. Next, I activated the Ultra Bonus, which cost me $400 (200x my stake). This also opened the Eagle Bonus Game, but with even larger multipliers and a Minor jackpot already in place. It was an exciting bonus round, but I won $376, which was slightly less than the price I paid to activate the feature.
- I went for the Ultra Bonus again, and this time it opened the Golden Bonus Game, with a Mystery Jackpot, the Mini jackpot, and various multipliers already in place on the reels. The bonus round was intense, with loads of lightning bolts and explosions. However, I only won $322, which was $78 less than the cost of activating the feature. It left me down by $102 overall.
- I had another go, triggering the Golden Bonus Game with the multipliers in place. I landed another three Mini jackpots and won $580 overall. That was great, as it left me up by $78. It seemed like a good time to take a break.
- Later that day, I returned to the King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus Review slot. This time I played on my iMac, and the animations looked terrific on the larger screen. Once again, I set my stake to $2. However, I didn’t bother with the base game. I went straight to the bonus buy page and bought the standard bonus round for $80 (40x my stake).
- It opened the Eagle Bonus Game, but it was over pretty quickly, and I only won $24, so I decided to go for a more expensive option. I bought the Super Bonus for $160. It opened the Golden Bonus Game, with multipliers already on the grid. Unfortunately, I only won $62. By now, I was down $154 for my second session and $76 overall. I had another go on the Super Bonus. This time, I went through to the Eagle Bonus Game, and I won $84, extending my losses to $152 overall.
- I tried the Super Bonus another five times. Each time, it cost me $160, and I won $132, $60, $74, $230, and $136. That was disappointing, as I only exceeded the cost of buying the feature once. It left me down by $320 overall.
- The Super Bonus wasn’t really delivering, so I went for the Ultra Bonus instead. It cost me $400, and I won $354. I hit it again, but I won just $124. On my third attempt, I won $204. I was now down by $838.
- My bad luck persisted. I bought the Ultra Bonus 10 more times, at a total cost of $4,000. I won $668, $242, $156, $428, $48, $654, $144, $136, $104, and $488, meaning I was down by $1,900.
- I had another Ultra Bonus attempt, and finally I won a decent prize of $1,140 from the Eagle Bonus Game. That was helpful, as it cut my losses to $1,160. I tried again, and won $326. I had another go, and I landed my biggest win of $1,384, courtesy of large multipliers on Mini and Minor jackpots.
- I was now down by just $250. Emboldened, I triggered it again, and I won $488, reducing my overall losses to $162. On my next attempt, I won $380. I then won $300. I decided to have one last attempt on the Ultra Bonus, and I won $634. That cut my losses to just $54 overall, so it seemed like a good time to walk away.
Bonus Features Through My Eyes: 4/5
King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus doesn’t offer any prizes during the base game. The focus is solely on triggering a bonus round and aiming for a large prize.
There are two bonus games: Eagle Bonus Game and Golden Bonus Game. I’ve broken down each bonus round below, and I’ve explained how they impacted my gameplay journey.
Feature | Description | Impact on Gameplay |
---|---|---|
Fixed jackpots | There are four fixed jackpots: Mini (10x your bet), Minor (20x), Major (25x), and Grand (1,000x). These jackpots can appear during the Eagle Bonus Game or the Golden Bonus game. |
I triggered the Mini and Minor jackpots many times while playing King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus. This led to some of my largest wins, as I would often have a 2x, 3x, or 5x multiplier on the Mini or the Minor jackpot. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to land the Grand jackpot, but the Major jackpot appeared a few times. |
Eagle Bonus Game | You will initially receive three re-spins at the start of the round. Each time a symbol appears, it resets the number of re-spins to three. The bonus game continues until you run out of re-spins or the entire grid is covered in symbols. Only eagle symbols appear on the reels during this bonus game. Each time a symbol lands, it sticks to the grid until the end of the round. The grid features 10 paylines. These are the potential winnings: ● Five eagle symbols on a payline: 20x ● Four symbols: 8x ● Three symbols: 4x ● Two symbols: 2x There are standard eagles, Mini jackpot eagles, Minor jackpot eagles, Major jackpot eagles, or Mystery jackpot eagles. At the end of the round, the Mystery jackpot turns into a standard, Mini, Minor, or Major symbol. Multipliers can be triggered at random during this round. You will often benefit from loads of multipliers during a single round. If you fill all 15 spaces on the 5x3 grid, you’ll win the Grand jackpot |
The Eagle Bonus Game appeared approximately 50% of the time after I triggered the bonus buy feature. I preferred the Golden Bonus Game, as it had more visual effects, and it seemed more exciting. However, the Eagle Bonus Game actually led to my two biggest wins. That helped me end my session with only a narrow loss, so I was ultimately pleased with this round. Multipliers were already in place on the Eagle Bonus Game after I bought the Ultra Bonus. That helped me rack up some pretty substantial wins. |
Golden Bonus Game | The Golden Bonus Game is simpler than the Eagle Bonus Game, as there are no paylines. Gold coins will appear on the grid instead. Each coin will have a value: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. That corresponds to 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, or 9x your bet. Alternatively, you can land a Mini jackpot gold coin, a Minor jackpot coin, a Major jackpot coin. There’s also a Mystery symbol and a Mystery jackpot coin, which will be revealed at the end of the round. You’ll start with three re-spins. Each time a symbol lands, it will stick to the grid, and the number of re-spins will reset to three. The round ends when you run out of re-spins or you fill the grid, triggering the Grand jackpot. Multipliers can appear at random during this round. There is also a special Boost symbol, a swirling blue vortex with lightning bolts, which collects all other values from the reels, including regular coins, jackpot symbols, and other boosts. |
I triggered the Golden Bonus Game about 50% of the time after activating the buy bonus feature. I found this round more entertaining than the Eagle Bonus Game, as the gameplay was more varied. It consistently delivered reasonably strong wins, whereas the Eagle Bonus Round was more volatile for me. My greatest success came when I landed the Boost feature. It appeared alongside Mini and Minor jackpots a few times, which helped me rack up some pretty strong winnings. I also benefited from large multipliers during this game, especially after activating the Ultra Bonus. |
Bonus Buy Feature | There are three bonus buy options: standard (40x), Super Bonus (80x), and Ultra Bonus (200x). | I only triggered the standard bonus once, as I didn’t find it particularly appealing. The Super Bonus option added valuable symbols and guaranteed multipliers to the grid at the start of the bonus round. That was far more exciting. However, my luck was poor when I activated this feature. I initially struggled with the Ultra Bonus option, and I was down by $1,900 at one point. However, I ultimately managed to claw back most of those losses, as the Ultra Bonus delivered a couple of large wins towards the end of my session. |
Balancing Risk and Reward: 3.5/5
This is a highly volatile game, so it won’t appeal to everyone. You need to be prepared to watch your balance decrease rapidly while waiting to trigger the bonus round, or you need to pay a substantial fee to trigger the bonus round. As such, this game isn’t for the faint of heart.
However, King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus can deliver significant rewards if you remain persistent. I was disappointed by the below average RTP rate of 95.5%, but the chance to win up to 10,000x my bet kept me motivated.
The Good and Bad of King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus
I enjoyed the graphics, the animations, and the bonus rounds, but I also identified a few drawbacks when conducting this King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus review.
- You can win up to 10,000x your bet on this game.
- The bonus features are exciting, with lots of special symbols and four fixed jackpots.
- There are three buy bonus options, which allow you to dive straight into the heart of the action.
- The 95.5% RTP rate is below average for an online slot.
- The base game is tough, as you can’t win a prize until you trigger the bonus round.
- The high level of volatility, combined with the inability to win a prize during the base game, may deter some players.
Final Thoughts on King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus
King of the Sky: Hit the Bonus is an interesting slot, with some terrific bonus features. I particularly liked the Boost symbol, and I enjoyed watching the eagle add multipliers to my Mini, Minor, and Major jackpots too.
The game looks great, with superb animations and a suitably ominous soundtrack. However, I’d like to see a higher RTP rate. I may return to King of the Sky at some point in the future, but I won’t bother with the base game. If I play again, I’ll just activate the Super Bonus or the Ultra Bonus immediately.
