Rhode Island is the seventh state in the US to offer legal online casinos to its citizens. The state rolled out Bally’s Casino in March 2024.
So far, things are looking positive. The first month of service produced $1.2 million of revenue, and the state’s two casinos reported record revenues as well.

What’s happening with Rhode Island online casinos right now?
- Oct. 1, 2024 – Rhode Island online casino revenue in August jumped 14.2% month-over-month, reaching nearly $3 million.
- Sept. 5, 2024 – Bally’s online casino won almost $2.6 million in July from players in Rhode Island to begin the first full fiscal year for the gaming vertical in the state.
- Aug. 5, 2024 – Rhode Island’s online casino market earned $2.3 million in net gaming revenue in June, up around $80,000 over May, according to the Rhode Island Lottery.
- July 2, 2024 – Bally’s, the sole RI online casino operator, generated nearly $2.3 million adjusted gross revenue in May, the Rhode Island Lottery reported.
- Apr. 30, 2024 – Rhode Island’s first month of online casino play generated $1.2 million in revenue. In addition, both of its land-based casinos reported record revenues.

Rhode Island sports betting
Online sports betting in Rhode Island is available as Gov. Gina Raimando signed the bill into law on June 22, 2018.
Both Rhode Island casinos maintain sports betting operations. Bally’s Twin River Casino in Lincoln has a full sportsbook. Bally’s Tiverton Casino has a kiosk to serve its customers.
On September 4, the then-Twin River Casino launched mobile wagering with no major complications, according to the state revenue department. Customers are required to sign up in-person before they can begin placing bets.
Bally’s Tiverton, near the Massachusetts border, launched its mobile sports betting product shortly after the casino in Lincoln.
Gaming company IGT has a relationship with Rhode Island’s casinos and Rhode Island itself. The company provided the entirety of the technical expertise necessary to bring Rhode Island’s sports betting online.
As a result, IGT is actually due to collect a greater percentage of sports betting revenue than the casinos themselves. Here’s how the split breaks down:
- State of Rhode Island: 51 percent
- IGT: 32 percent
- Casinos: 17 percent
Casinos surrender over 80 percent of their earnings to other entities. However, this split only serves to underline the degree of symbiosis between Rhode Island’s casinos and the government.
State casino operator history
Rhode Island’s first move towards legalizing gambling occurred back in 1934. That year, voters approved the addition of pari-mutuel betting on horse races.
Two racetracks, Narragansett Park and Lincoln Downs, eventually opened to serve the public’s wagering needs. Both tracks lasted until the 1970s before closing down.
However, the demise of horseracing seemed more like a ing of the baton. In 1973, Rhode Island introduced the state lottery.
Further referendums brought pull-tab lottery games and bingo to the Ocean State. Limited forms of off-track betting showed up at Newport Jai Alai and Lincoln Greyhound Park.
In 1992, Foxwoods Resort Casino opened across the border in Connecticut and began drawing money away from Rhode Island. In response, the state began to allow video lottery terminals at the racetrack.
Casinos finally arrive
In 2012, voters approved full-scale table gaming for two casinos, the Twin River Casino and the Newport Grand Casino. In 2015, Twin River bought its rival, and became the lone casino operator in Rhode Island.
Twin River is the larger of the two casinos by far. The property hosts over 4,200 slot machines and over 100 table games. The property sits where the old Lincoln Downs racetrack used to be.
By virtue of a second voter referendum in 2016, Newport Grand, which was originally owned by businessmen Joseph R. Paolino, Jr. and Paul G. Roiff, is in the process of moving its operations from Newport. The new facility, dubbed Twin River Tiverton Casino & Hotel, will reside in Tiverton in order to compete directly with Foxwoods.
IGT-Twin River owns both casinos. In June of 2021, IGT and Twin Rivers owner Bally’s gained control of the most of the state’s gambling operations for the next two decades. The company also owns Arapahoe Park, a racino in Aurora, Colorado, and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Both casinos in Rhode Island have some manner of sports betting. The Twin River Casino in Lincoln has a full sportsbook. The Tiverton location has a kiosk for placing bets.
Rhode Island becomes the seventh state with real money online casinos on Mar. 1, 2024. Bally’s, the state’s casino partner, debuted its online casino on that date.
