A Houston billionaire, Tilman Fertitta, got a green light from Clark County Zoning Commission on Wednesday to develop a new hotel and Las Vegas casino.

Fertitta, who also owns the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, can start working on his 43-story, 2,420-room casino resort at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue.

Jeff Cantwell, Executive Vice President of Development at Fertitta Entertainment:

“We were pleased with Clark County Commission’s unanimous approval of our development plans today. However, this is just another step in our overall review and planning process. No firm decision has yet been made concerning our future plans.”

Fertitta’s new Las Vegas casino moves closer to reality

In June, Fertitta acquired 6.2 acres plot of land for $270 million, between the MGM Grand and Planet Hollywood, across the street from CityCenter. The project site is where the now-closed Travelodge is. The property currently includes the motel’s parking space and a small strip mall.

An attorney with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Rebecca Miltenberger, told the county on behalf of Fertitta Entertainment:

“We are very excited to bring this project to fruition over the next two years, the holdings company of the billionaire that is spearheading the Strip undertaking.”

She went on to add:

“The project is supposed to be 43 stories tall, include a luxury hotel with about 2,400 rooms, casino, a 2,500 seat theater.”

The new investment would also feature:

  • Several restaurants
  • 37,000-foot spa
  • Fitness center
  • Wedding chapel
  • Convention facilities
  • Auto showroom

Fertitta representatives have not revealed a timeline for when the Travelodge and strip mall demolition may start. A specific budget for this investment was not specified either.

Fertitta is no stranger to Las Vegas

The new towering casino project would not be Fertitta’s first Nevada casino project. This new casino resort would only extend Fertitta’s foothold in Vegas.

The Houston businessman also owns Golden Nugget casinos all over the country, including Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada. Likewise, he owns Lake Charles in Louisiana, Mississippi’s Biloxi and Atlantic City.

What’s more, Fertitta possesses restaurants under Landry’s, including Morton’s, Del Frisco’s, the Palm and Claim Jumper. He is also a cousin of the Fertitta brothers, who operate Station Casino properties.
