The South Dakota Senate on Monday approved a proposal to allow voters to decide whether they want sports betting there to expand to mobile and online betting.
There are two crucial steps left before the proposal would appear on the November ballot, however.
The South Dakota House must still sign off, and Gov. Kristi Noem has in the past opposed the expansion of gambling. It was hardly a rout in the Senate either, with the measure ing muster by one vote.
South Dakota sports betting currently a Deadwood operation
Legalized two years ago, sports betting in South Dakota became available in a collection of casinos in Deadwood in 2021. That was a close vote, too, with 58% of the electorate ing that constitutional amendment.
As part of this current proposal, the servers that facilitate state-wide betting would be housed in Deadwood, and Native Tribes would be cut in on mobile betting.
The South Dakota Senate Commerce and Energy Committee advanced the proposal last week.
