The three Massachusetts casinos brought in more than $94 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in September as the wait for legal Massachusetts sports betting continues.

The revenue generated by the trio of properties sured win from the same month in both 2021 and 2020 according to data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC).

Massachusetts casino revenue continues to climb year on year

The MGC’s revenue numbers indicate that the state’s three casinos continue to generate revenue that exceeds the previous two years.

Here’s how the combined GGR looks for the Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino:

  • September 2022: $94.35 million
  • September 2021:  $88.82 million
  • September 2020: $70.54 million

Last month’s revenue represented a 33.75% increase over the same numbers from two years ago and a 6.23% increase over last year’s September totals.

Slots for the majority of the gaming revenue in the state. Both MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park saw a drop in slots hold compared to last month. Encore, however, saw a slight bump in hold from 8.26% in August to 8.59% in September.

Encore also saw a significant jump in table game revenue. The MGC’s data notes that Encore’s table-game GGR rose nearly $6 million between August and September: $22.71 million to $28.64 million.

Encore once again brings in biggest chunk of revenue

In September, Encore Boston Harbor ed for more than $60 million of the $94.35 million casinos generated (MGM ed for $20.57 million and Plainridge tallied around $12.2 million).

Encore has long been the state’s flagship casino. Since it opened in 2019, it has generated more than $1.8 billion in GGR and has contributed nearly $500 million in state taxes. It’s the only casino in the state to generate more than $30 million in GGR in a month. Also, it has generated nearly twice the total GGR that MGM Springfield has.

Encore’s monthly production is prestigious not just compared to other Massachusetts casinos but to casinos in other states, too. For example, Encore has pulled in more than $480 million in GGR in 2022 so far. Hard Rock Casino Hotel Atlantic City, one of the top casinos in Atlantic City, has totaled just over $380 million in GGR in 2022 to date.

Encore, of course, has the advantage of operating in a state where there are only three casinos in total. Hard Rock Atlantic City, on the other hand, is competing for revenue with eight other casinos that physically are very nearby.

Looking ahead to fourth-quarter results

The final three months of the year tend to be solid ones for Massachusetts casinos. December, in particular, has proven to be a great month for Encore and MGM.

In 2021, the two casinos saw their second-best revenue months in December. Plainridge Park’s numbers tend to drop during the holidays, but the casinos’ projected dip won’t have a big impact on the overall number since Plainridge averages anywhere from $11 million to $12 million in monthly GGR.
