Organizations connected to gambling have put their money where their mouths are when it comes to addressing Oregon’s problem gambling. Now, they want help in deciding what to talk about.
The first funding cycle of the Oregon Council on Problem Gambling has a new deadline for research proposals. The request for proposals is quite broad and could benefit gamblers both in and outside of Oregon.
Oregon problem gambling research wanted
If you’ve got the brains, the OG has the money. Furthermore, you’ve got the balance of this month to get your request in. In a Monday press release, the OG announced it is extending its deadline for proposals to June 30.
The release states that funding is available for projects that,
“Develop expertise in the areas of gambling, problem gambling, problem gambling services, workforce development, or gambling policy.”
The scope of the potential recipients of funding is large. The release specifically mentions:
- Best practices for effective player protections
- Gambling in underserved communities
- Implications for policy changes in Oregon
- Marketing of treatment
- Role of new technologies in gambling
- Sports betting
- Youth gambling
While the research preferably focuses on Oregon, the Council responsible gambling in the nation as well. Even proposals seeking to re-evaluate existing data are up for consideration.
The funding for such projects comes from some of the greatest beneficiaries of legal gambling in Oregon.
Oregon gambling companies funding grants
Many of the most active gaming entities in the state have provided funding to the research grants. That list includes:
- Aristocrat Gaming
- Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation
- IGT
- Oregon Lottery
- Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund
- Three Rivers Foundation
Legal gambling in Oregon includes historical horse racing, in-person wagering on sports plus slots and table games at tribal casinos, online sports betting via DraftKings, and pari-mutuel betting on live horse races. Naturally, state lottery games are also available.
The OG hopes to make solutions to problem gambling accessible and robust in the state. Such solutions could begin with research that these grants .
