Spring is a magical time in the Northeast. As the weather warms, and the hours of sunlight increase, New Englanders that have spent four-plus months cooped up in their homes begin to emerge like bears from hibernation.
And apparently, they want to gamble. Just look at the numbers compared to February.
Historically, March has been a boon for casinos across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. 2019 was no exception, with revenues soaring to near summer levels across the region.

Regulators in Massachusetts make a final decision on Wynn
The verdict is in. Wynn Resorts gets to keep its Massachusetts casino license, which means Encore Boston Harbor will open, as scheduled, in June.
But it wasn’t all good news for Wynn. The company was slapped with a $35 million fine, and a number of stipulations that will need to be met to keep its license. Additionally, Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox got hit with a $500,000 fine and will have to undergo several rounds of leadership training.
Sports betting gets a date with Massachusetts committee
Massachusetts will also give sports betting a look during a t committee hearing on May 28. If it goes favorably, the hearing could be a jumping off point for the Bay State to legalize sports betting during the state’s annual budget talks.
Casino bill stalls in New Hampshire
Once again (20 bills and counting), a casino expansion bill has stalled out in the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
As it has several times in the past, the NH Senate voted to authorize two casinos, but a House committee put an end to that talk when it shut down the measure by a 17-2 vote.

Massachusetts
March was a $25 million month for MGM Springfield, the first time it’s hit that number since October, its first full month after launch. That’s a good sign for the property billed as a destination resort that is ideal for spring and summer fun.
Plainridge Casino had a solid March. Despite the new competition posed by MGM, Plainridge managed to better its revenue tally from last March.
Connecticut
Connecticut‘s two tribal casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, are handling the new competition about as well as could be expected.
Foxwoods revenue was down 8% year-over-year in March, while Mohegan’s dip was just 7%. Those drops sting, but they’re nowhere near the original projection.
Of course, the big test will come in June when the $2.5 billion Encore Boston Harbor opens its doors.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island‘s two casinos continue to shine in the region.
Twin River Lincoln‘s revenues were relatively flat year over year (a good performance considering the new casinos in the region).
And the new Twin River Tiverton property once again outpaced its former incarnation (Newport Grand) by a factor of three.
Maine
Largely “locals” casinos, Maine’s two casino properties continue to quietly chug along, far away from their competition in southern New England.
Oxford Casino and Hollywood Casino collectively tallied an impressive $13 million in March.
