New York Mets owner Steve Cohen will host a community meeting to discuss a possible New York casino near Citi Field.
The “visioning session” will be at the ballpark on Jan. 7. The session will kick off a series of talks with community on re-imagining the space around the stadium.
In a press release, Cohen said his team has been listening to the local community on ways to reinvest in the space to access its full potential.
“For months, we have been listening to the local community who keeps telling us there is more they want from the area. Everyone agrees that the status quo isn’t acceptable. We are committed to putting forward a vision for the area that will create a shared space that people not only want to come to and enjoy but can be proud of.”
Is a New York casino in Queens the right answer?
Although a New York casino isn’t explicitly mentioned, it’s no secret that Cohen has discussed building a casino near the stadium with Las Vegas Sands. The space around Citi Field is 50 acres of vacant asphalt.
This concrete jungle makes it difficult to reach the nearby waterfront. Cohen’s vision for the vacant space around Citi Field is built around five core principles.
- Community first
- Building dedicated open space
- Waterfront access
- Year-round entertainment
- Creating good-paying local jobs and economic opportunities for small businesses
The Mets already have a sports betting partner
In April, the Mets inked a partnership for a Caesars Sportsbook lounge at the Metro Grille inside Citi Field.
At the time, Chris Holdren, Co-President of Caesars Digital, had this to say:
“The Mets’ fanbase is one of the most loyal in baseball, and this partnership offers us the chance to treat those ionate fans like Caesars. We look forward to opening our space at Citi Field during an exciting time for the franchise.”
Those in New York looking to attend the Jan. 7 meeting should RSVP for the event due to capacity limitations.
Since taking over the team, Cohen has made investing in the ballpark, team and surrounding areas his top priority.
