The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) says sports betting operators have until Oct. 5 to submit the necessary paperwork to launch on Jan.1, 2023.
“A number” of license applicants have yet to provide the necessary paperwork, said OCCC Director of Communications Jessica Franks.
Operators can still launch after Jan. 1 if the Oct. 5 deadline is missed.
Ohio operators are still waiting for approval
According to Franks, operators must submit company ownership and holdings documents.
“They have known about this requirement basically since the law ed, and they have known about it since the applications were made available to them,” Franks said.
“So we cannot issue licenses if we do not have the information regarding who has control of the applicant.”
So far, none of the 25 mobile sportsbook operators that have submitted applications have been approved for a license. Some operators include Caesars, Fanatics, Barstool, PointsBet and BetMGM.
All applicants are required to submit company ownership documents.
This includes applicants for:
- Mobile
- Retail
- Kiosk operators
- Service providers
- Suppliers
Ohio sports betting still on track for 2023
In addition to the Oct. 5 deadline, Franks said there is also a Nov. 2 deadline for operators to submit “compliance documents.” These documents include betting procedures, house rules, geolocation and other requirements.
A third deadline is also set for Dec. 2; however, Franks said the OCCC is focused on the October deadline.
“We’ll continue to issue licenses on a rolling basis, and then we will also continue working with those entities to make sure their compliance documents are submitted and approved. Those are probably the two big things we’ll be working on through the end of the year,” Franks said.
The state Legislative Service Commission expects Ohio sports betting to be a successful revenue generator for the state. The commission estimates the OH betting market to be about $1 billion for FY 2023 and roughly $3 billion the following year.
