The Ohio Lottery has hired Greece-based operator Intralot to run its sports betting kiosk enterprise.
The five-year deal means Intralot will provide current and new infrastructure to Ohio sports betting kiosks for retailers and customers. The move makes sense, as Intralot has partnered with the Ohio Lottery for more than a decade.
“Since 2009, Intralot has provided a secure central gaming system in the State of Ohio that delivers, manages, and s for all current in-state and multi-state draw Ohio Lottery games, and other related services,” the company said in a statement.
The move comes just weeks before Ohio launches sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023.
Ohio sports betting kiosks allow the bettor to watch live games
Intralot currently provides lottery kiosks to the Ohio Lottery. So, when lottery customers use a lottery kiosk to buy tickets, they’re likely using an Intralot machine.
The company can also provide technology and services, management of lottery operations, and targeted marketing, among other things.
All those services should be in play when the state’s sports betting kiosks launch on New Year’s Day. Intralot will likely supply the kiosks that retailers will use to offer sports betting.
The company offers full-size lottery machines but also provides kiosks that would be a good fit for sports betting. Two kiosks, in particular, seem to be tailored to sports betting: the GameKiosk and GameStation Betting.
Both kiosks offer dual high-definition screens. The GameKiosk is the smaller terminal of the two and has a more modern look.
While Intralot tailors the GameKiosk for sports betting and lottery games, the company brands the GameStation as a terminal that’s specific to sports betting.
The machine has a two-screen setup that allows bettors to place bets on one screen and watch live games on the other screen.
Whichever kiosks the company uses will be connected to Intralot’s Orion sports betting system, a multi-faceted tech platform that will underpin Ohio’s kiosks.
Kiosk betting will be available at over 1,000 businesses
Intralot will have its hands full when sports betting in Ohio launches next month. Kiosks will be available at more than 1,000 businesses.
The kiosks will be available at a variety of locations including:
- Gas stations
- Convenience stores
- Restaurants
- Grocery stores
- Sports bars
PlayOhio predicts that around 185,000 people will use the kiosks regularly. The terminals may generate up to 2% of the state’s sports betting handle (total bets placed).
In of dollars, PlayOhio predicts that kiosks could generate anywhere from $45 million to $190 million in handle and that the state’s total handle could be somewhere between $8 billion and $9 billion.
The kiosks’ small slice of handle is largely due to Ohio regulations. Bettors can only gamble up to $700 a week total on kiosks.
