FanDuel Sportsbook Remains Top Operator In Illinois

Illinois sports betting nets fourth consecutive month with over $1 billion in betting handle, according to data from Illinois Gaming Board.

For the fourth straight month, Illinois sports betting generated over $1 billion in handle, according to the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB).

New figures released by the IGB show more than $1.07 billion was gambled through IL sports betting apps. That’s up 4% from the previous record of $1.03 billion in November.

Over the last four months:

  • January: $1.07 billion
  • December: $1.029 billion
  • November: $1.03 billion
  • October: $1 billion

Illinois is just the fourth state to post four consecutive billion-dollar handle months. The others are New York, New Jersey and Nevada.

Illinois sports betting up year-over-year

Compared to January 2022, when sportsbooks generated over $867 million, IL sports betting handle is up 23%. A contributing factor was the change in legislation allowing residents to for online sportsbooks from anywhere in the state. 

Although sports betting handles over the past four months have hovered around $1 billion, it is up 29% from September ($831.8 million) and 89% better than August ($565 million).

Lifetime sports betting handle:

  1. New Jersey — almost $35 billion
  2. Nevada — nearly $30.5 billion
  3. Illinois — over $19.7 billion
  4. Pennsylvania — over $19.6 billion
  5. New York — nearly $18.5 billion

Illinois enters top three for US sports betting revenue 

For January, Illinois ranks third in of gross gaming revenue, with just over $88.5 million

Newcomer Ohio, which launched sports betting on Jan. 1, led the nation with over $209 million. New York, with $150 million in revenue and New Jersey, with $72 million, rounded out the top four. 

Top-four sports betting revenue (January):

  • Ohio: $209 million
  • New York: $150 million
  • Illinois: $88.5 million
  • New Jersey: $72 million

In of overall revenue for 2022, Illinois was second with $806 million. New York checked in at No.1 with $1.4 billion, and New Jersey secured the third spot with $763 million. 

Lifetime sports betting revenue ranking (through January 2023):

  1. New Jersey — nearly $2.5 billion
  2. Nevada — over $1.7 billion
  3. Illinois — over $1.568 billion
  4. New York — over $1.55 billion
  5. Pennsylvania — over $1.54 billion

Top operator and tax revenue numbers

In January, Illinois sportsbooks produced total tax revenue of $15.4 million, up from the $13 million collected in December. Lifetime, sports betting in Illinois has generated almost $248 million in tax revenue since launching in June 2019. 

As for the top operator, the FanDuel Sportsbook generated $373 million in sports betting handle for January. As a result, the sportsbook at Fairmount Park collected $43.7 million in revenue. 

The DraftKings Sportsbook at Casino Queen in East St. Louis came in second with $336 million in handle and $23.8 million in revenue.
