The new sportsbook at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
With the necessary permits acquired, general contractor Pepper Construction can move forward with building DraftKings Sportsbook.
What to expect from the new DraftKings Sportsbook
In partnership with DraftKings, Cubs ownership announced plans for a new state-of-the-art sportsbook in 2020.
The sportsbook will be located in right-field, at the former site of the Captain Morgan Club. The project will be three floors measuring 23,350 square feet, complete with food and beverage offerings.
Over the years, the Cubs have been slowly renovating the historic ballpark in a strategy to make the location a year-round destination.
Path to completion for Wrigley Field
In 2020, DraftKings co-founder and president Matt Kalish said the partnership with the Chicago Cubs was a historic moment.
“This is truly a historic moment, as we are thrilled to align with the renowned Chicago Cubs franchise and iconic Wrigley Field to provide sports bettors in Chicago with a revolutionary sports betting experience. As two organizations that share a mutual ion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we look forward to working in collaboration with the Cubs, an organization steeped in tradition, and making our presence felt in and around Wrigleyville.”
No doubt this was an exciting moment for sports betting in Illinois.
A year later, the Chicago City Council approved a new ordinance from Mayor Lori Lightfoot, paving the way for sports betting at Chicago stadiums.
The ordinance ed by a 19-7 vote allowing sportsbooks at the five stadiums across the city.
- Guaranteed Rate Field
- Soldier Field
- United Center
- Wintrust Arena
Are more sportsbooks coming to Chicago?
For now, only one other stadium has plans for a new sportsbook.
In February, the United Center announced a partnership with the FanDuel Group to open a sportsbook at the iconic arena. The stadium is home to the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks.
The deal awaits approval from the Illinois Gaming Board. Eventually, it will allow for the opening of a FanDuel Sportsbook.
