The New York Lottery announced the launch of new training for its retailers. The Lottery has introduced new modules to reinforce the importance of age verification and other best practices.

As Commission Executive Director Robert Williams said in a press release issued on Oct. 6:

“Responsible gaming principles guide New York state’s efforts in the design, marketing and sale of lottery games. This new training s retailers as they help maintain the integrity and safety of our games.”

Training to New York Lottery retailers’ age verification procedures

The North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries will offer more training on how to spot fake IDs. Lottery retailers in New York will have access to the training for when they sell tickets like the Mega Millions plays that led to seven-figure prizes for New Yorkers in July.

The training also covers guidance on how to engage customers who may not be accustomed to showing ID for the purchase of a lottery scratch-off or draw game ticket.

New York Lottery Director Gweneth Dean commented:

“Lottery retailers are the first line of defense in the prevention of both underage and at-risk play. This training, along with other tools we provide, gives businesses the ability to confidently serve of-age patrons.”

Retailers will ister the training via the Lottery’s retailer portal and through their internal learning management systems. Once the training is completed, owners, managers, and frontline staff who work with lottery games and interact with players will have a “shared understanding” of what it means to “sell responsibly.”

Apart from lottery retailers, New York Lottery management, marketing representatives and call-center staff will also be participating in the training.

What responsible selling is all about

By law, NY Lottery retailers must post commission-supplied age verification and complementary responsible gaming signage in highly visible locations within their businesses.

Lottery retailers – including store owners, managers and clerks – are encouraged to use a customized responsible gaming terminal key to print messages showing the NYS HOPEline they can provide to lottery players they assume may need help.

Before purchasing tickets, players can find all the information about game odds, prize structure, remaining prizes, and payout information on the New York Lottery website.

Earlier this year, New York became the first state lottery to distribute scratch-off tickets with a QR code (or a URL equivalent) to its network of nearly 15,000 retailers across the state. Moreover, the Lottery provides players with 24-hour access to problem gambling help close to their location.

Together with the New York State Office of Addiction s and Services and the New York Council on Problem Gambling, the Commission is a founding member of New York’s Responsible Play Partnership.
